School Art Project

Every January since 1912, over a half million visitors enjoy 17 fun filled days at the South Florida Fair, one of Florida’s oldest and largest community events. Fairgoers are entertained by first class stage shows, live concert performances, sensational midway rides, unique shopping and the best fair food. The 2027 annual Fair, January 15-31, 2027 will be a Mythical Fair!

Mythological shields were rarely just defensive gear. Shields in mythology embody more than mere protection. They are symbols of divine power and cultural identity. In world history and folklore, they served as divine artifacts, cosmological symbols, and carriers of magical powers that decided the fates of gods and heroes. The shield in mythology is a multi-layered symbol. It stands for the invulnerability of the gods, the bravery of the heroes and the wisdom of creation. In many cultures, the shield is associated with the sky or the sun, which underlines its cosmological significance. This connection between the earthly and the divine makes the shield a particularly powerful element in mythological tales.

As part of the Exposition, each school will be asked to create their own code of arms:

Each participating school will be provided with the shape to decorate for display at the Fair. Please decorate both sides and decorate with a lightweight material when possible as the projects will be displayed from the ceiling in the main exposition center for the 17 days of the Fair.

Winning projects will be selected by a panel of judges during the fair. Each category – Elementary, Middle and High School – will be awarded a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place cash award.

First Place: $200 each
Second Place: $150 each
Third Place: $100 each
A “People’s choice” cash award will be selected by the public in each of the categories winning $50 each.

MATERIALS SUPPLIED

One 32" x 48" - 1/2” thick heavy-duty matte-finish foam board pre-cut shape.

PICK UP AND DROP OFF INFORMATION

Materials can be picked up by the schools at the Fairgrounds, September 23 & 24 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. (arrangements can be made for special pickup)

Drop off at Gate 10 off of fairgrounds road on December 16 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm.
