We are Sensory Inclusive®

The South Florida Fair partnered with KultureCity to make the facility sensory inclusive. This initiative promotes an accommodating and positive experience for all guests and fans with a sensory issue who visit.

The certification process required the staff at the South Florida Fair to be trained by leading medical professionals on how to recognize those guests and fans with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation. Sensory bags equipped with noise canceling headphones (provided by Puro Sound Labs), fidget tools, verbal cue cards (produced in conjunction with Boardmaker) and weighted lap pads are also available to all guests who may feel overwhelmed by the environment.

These guests also have use of quiet rooms; one in the Bink Museum in Yesteryear Village and the other in the Artist Alley in Building 2 on the covered concourse during the annual Fair.

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions. One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to overstimulation and noise. With its new certification, the South Florida Fair is now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in having the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible when attending any event at the fairgrounds.

Prior to attending an event, families can download the free KultureCity App where they can view what sensory features are available and where they can access them. Also, on the app is the Social Story, which will provide a preview of what to expect while enjoying the Fair.

“Knowing that we are able to serve the needs of families who have a sensory challenge and who may not have previously attended is heartwarming,” said South Florida Fair President & CEO Vicki Chouris. “We feel gratified knowing that we are going the extra mile to be all inclusive.”

KultureCity is a leading nonprofit recognized nationwide for using their resources to revolutionize and effect change in the community for those with sensory needs, not just those with autism. Since the program’s inception, KultureCity has created over 450 sensory inclusive venues in four countries; including special events such as NFL Pro-Bowl, NFL Super Bowl, and MLB All Star Weekend. KultureCity has won many awards for its efforts including being awarded as one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2019 by FastCompany.
