YOUTH DAIRY CATTLE FITTING & GROOMING CONTEST

Eligibility: (Age as of September 1, 2006)
1. There will be a Junior, Intermediate and Senior
Contest.
JUNIOR: 8 - 11 Years
INTERMEDIATE: 12 - 14 Years
SENIOR: 15 - 18 Years
2. The Fitting and Grooming Contest will be held in the Livestock area.
3. *** Attention Youth - You MUST have attended the Mandatory YOUTH LIVESTOCK
SHOW ETHICS AND ANIMAL CARE WORKSHOP in order to show an animal at the 2008 South
Florida
Fair.
4. Youth participating in the Youth Dairy Show on SATURDAY, February 2nd are
eligible for the contest.
5. Awards will be provided by the South Florida Fair.
6. Any youth who wishes to participate in this contest may do so by borrowing
an animal that is entered in the individual classes for the South Florida Fair
Dairy Show.
Rules & Regulations:
1. Each participant must furnish one dairy heifer to be used. While there are
no age requirements on the animal, we suggest that the animal be at least a junior
yearling.
2. The animal must be clean and dry upon entering the ring for the contest.
3. Since nose tongs will not be allowed in the contest, we require all animals
to be clipped from, including, the head and upper half of the neck before entering
the ring for the contest. The
remaining part of the animal MUST be unclipped. Hooves should be trimmed as well.
4. While grooming chutes are not required, their use is encouraged. Grooming
chutes will not be supplied by the Fair.
5. Each individual will have 1 1/2 hours to complete the clipping of their animal.
6. Any help from outside to an individual will result in an immediate disqualification.
7. Any questions concerning rules and regulations should be directed to the show
superintendent. All decisions will be made by the superintendent and his committee.
8. Anyone not cooperating with the superintendent or his committee will be disqualified
and forfeit any prize money or award.
Scoring:
A team of 2 - 3 judges will evaluate each entrant and the animal. Each animal
will be inspected before entering the ring. Observation during the contest and
final evaluation of the groomed animal will be accounted for as a part of selecting
the winning participant.
Scorecard:
(20 PTS) 1. Condition and thriftiness: Showing normal growth, being neither too
fat or too thin.
(30 PTS) 2. Grooming: Hair properly groomed and clean. The hide soft and pliable.
Hair dressing should not be used in excess. Hooves trimmed and shaped to enable
the animal to walk and
stand naturally.
(30 PTS) 3. Clipping: The hair is properly clipped to show the animal to the
best advantage. The hair is well blended and areas are free of clip marks. The
animal has an overall smooth appearance.
(20 PTS) 4. Cleanliness: Hair and switch are clean and free from stains. Hide
and ears are free of dirt, legs and feet are clean.
